Internet Explorer 11 fading away

The most well-known and popular blogging platform, WordPress, is considering dropping support for Internet Explorer 11 as the browser's usage dips below 1%.

Using three metrics to determine the number of people still using IE 11, WordPress has found that its cumulative usage is below 1%:

These usage numbers are similar to when WordPress dropped support for Internet Explorer 8, 9, and 10 in 2017.

With such low numbers and the high cost of maintaining the browser, WordPress plans to remove support for Internet Explorer 11 in the future.

"In terms of the current WordPress user experience, a flag was added to not recommend IE in BrowseHappy about 13 months ago, so by now, most WordPress users should be aware. Tied to this, the experience overall is not optimal in IE11 with a high cost of maintenance for developers," WordPress explained in a blog post last week.

To formulate their plans on dropping support, WordPress is asking users and organizations who still use the browser to provide feedback by March 18th.

WordPress is not alone in dropping support for IE 11.

In August 2020, Microsoft announced that they would no longer support Internet Explorer on the Microsoft Teams web app, and Microsoft 365 would no longer support it starting on August 17th, 2021.
