Jamstacked Issue 41

Unpacking all the key Jamstack conference announcements

Published: Oct 14, 2021

Your update on all things Jamstack

#41 — October 14, 2021
✦ web version

There's so much to unpack this week with a ton of announcements at last week's Jamstack Conf. The theme was "How it started. How it's going", which seemed to be a recognition that the meaning of Jamstack is changing. Matt Biilmann seemed to recognize as much during the keynote when he talked about the original Jamstack manifesto he wrote and looked at how the key elements have stood up (pretty well, actually).

Interestingly, there were no big announcements from Netlify themselves at the event, but there were a ton of other announcements that I'll do my best to breakdown here. There's going to be a lot in this issue, but I promise it's worth your time.

▶  Jamstack Conf 2021 Recordings
If you missed the event or were unable to watch due to the technical difficulties (the entire block they were broadcasting from lost power for hours), the full set of videos is already online. In particular, check out the keynote in which Matt discusses some key concepts that will impact the future of Jamstack with folks like Evan You, Rich Harris and more. I also recommend Rich Harris’s “Have Single-Page Apps Ruined the Web?”. I’m not sure I agree with everything he says (or with the name he promotes) but it is definitely thought provoking.

Netlify

Eleventy 1.0 Beta 1 Released
Eleventy has finally hit 1.0 status. One of the key features is Eleventy Serverless, which does server-side rendering (SSR) and distributed persistent rendering (DPR). For more details, Raymond Camden covers the upgrade experience and new output options.

Introducing Nuxt 3 Beta
The key aspect of Nuxt 3 is its new server engine that allows it to deploy just about anywhere, including serverless deployment similar to Next.js (wherein SSR pages deploy as serverless functions). Netlify has already announced support for this. It also supports Vue 3 and Vite. Want to learn more? Watch Ben Hong’s livestream recording.

Jamming Into the Mainstream: Jamstack Community Survey 2021
The Jamstack community survey results were also announced during Jamstack Conf (you can watch the summary by Laurie Voss). There were 7,500 respondents, with significant growth in newer Jamstack developers and lots of adoption in the enterprise. As the follow up on CSS Tricks notes, React continues to dominate the framework space. Meanwhile, The New Stack points out that Wordpress usage is still large even as headless Wordpress didn't see any growth.

Building A Static-First MadLib Generator With Portable Text And Netlify On-Demand Builder Functions
On-demand builders can be useful for more than just deferring rendering of large amounts of content. They are also useful for generating user-generated content, as in this MadLib generator.

Making Sense of Jamstack & Serverless Architecture
It can often be assumed that saying Jamstack or a serverless architeture are basically one and the same. This post breaks down the difference and shows how both can be combined.
