Abstract: What if I told you that:
* OS updates are less scary
* Changes move across environments quicker
* Consistency across systems is easier
and you only need to learn a few new things?
Maybe you think about your build process daily. Maybe 8 years ago, you found a way that works and try to never touch it (xkcd 2347 anyone?). In this session, you'll learn how to combine the container skills you already have with a few new tools to rethink your standard Linux builds.
Bootable containers combine lessons from several projects with years of production experience to build, deliver, and maintain your familiar Linux environment in a new way. Some of the things we think are 'just the way it is' turn out to be less concrete with this new perspective.
Applying container principles to these builds lets us change the way we think about custom versus shared components, how to track changes and make them visible, and how we can use tools that already exist to address a lot of the toil and trouble associated with building, testing, delivering, and updating gold images.

From a security perspective, urllib3 continues to lead the pack for Python packages in terms of implementing security standards like OpenSSF Scorecard, SLSA, and Trusted Publishers — adopting this new feature days after it was announced during PyCon US 2023. The team remediated two moderate-severity vulnerabilities in 2023 and made the fixes available in both the new v2.0 and security-fix only v1.26.x release streams.

This talk will explore the integration of the eBPF ecosystem with Kubernetes, highlighting its potential to transform how operators and developers observe, secure, and troubleshoot their deployments. We will start by introducing eBPF and its core concepts, including its architecture, programming model, and key benefits such as minimal overhead, improved visibility, and dynamic tracing capabilities. We will then review real-world examples of open source tools which leverage eBPF for networking, security, and observability in Kubernetes environments. We will also explore an open source project called bpfman (https://bpfman.io), an eBPF Manager focusing on simplifying the deployment, administration and visibility of eBPF programs in Kubernetes clusters.

Abstract: Telemetry and metrics collection can provide an enormous amount of useful information about applications and their users. From time-on-site to tracking software versions in crash reports, metrics enable informed engineering and business decisions. This type of information can also be used to feed AI and ML Large Language Models. But all that data sitting around can also be a liability when it can be pieced together to develop an increasingly robust understanding of an individual user. In today’s world that is rife with data thievery and data-driven bias, it’s time to explore how to have your cake and eat it too when it comes to metrics collection. We'll introduce you to set of novel privacy-preserving metrics collection protocols that are being developed in the IETF and deployed in Open Source repos at Divvi Up.

Title: Dependency management: the cause of—and solution to—all supply chain problems
Abstract: How many dependencies does your software project have?
The answer is more complicated than simply looking at your requirements.txt or package.json file.
And as to how many you’ll have tomorrow? It turns out that if there’s anything you can say about your dependencies - it’s that “it depends”.
Most software is built with hundreds if not thousands of direct and transitive dependencies, and those dependencies change every day. Our analysis shows that up to 20% of PyPI packages change their dependency graphs multiple times per week. Ensuring that each one of these dependencies is trustworthy is a daunting task.
In this talk, we’ll compare the decisions that determine not just your dependency graph but also the vulnerabilities that might lurk in it, and for how long. We’ll look at what makes some vulnerabilities like log4shell so hard (and slow!) to fix across an ecosystem, dig into the complexities of dependency resolution algorithms (anyone want to solve a sudoku?), and recommend tools that can make practical dependency management possible if not easy.

Abstract: There are as many models for OSPOs as there are companies, and given the dynamic nature of the environment, it’s bound to get messy. And the OSPO is on your side! Most folks won’t sign up for such a role if they don’t have their heart on the side of Open Source and the developers that consume and deliver it. In this talk, I’ll highlight responsibilities of development teams and Open Source program managers when consuming open source in a commercial environment. Moving as much as possible “to the left” in a project’s development and communicating early and often can reduce friction when your project requests an outgoing license.

Abstract: Open Source Software, the backbone of today’s digital infrastructure, must be sustainable for the long-term. Qureshi and Fang (2011) find that motivating, engaging, and retaining new contributors is what makes open source projects sustainable.
Yet, as Steinmacher, et al. (2015) identifies, first-time open source contributors often lack timely answers to questions, newcomer orientation, mentors, and clear documentation. Moreover, since the term was first coined in 1998, open source lags far behind other technical domains in participant diversity. Trinkenreich, et al. (2022) reports that only about 5% of projects were reported to have women as core developers, and women authored less than 5% of pull requests, but had similar or even higher rates of pull request acceptances to men. So, how can we achieve more diversity in open source communities and projects?
Bloomberg’s Women in Technology (BWIT) community, Open Source Program Office (OSPO), and Corporate Philanthropy team collaborated with NumFOCUS to develop a volunteer incentive model that aligns business value, philanthropic impact, and individual technical growth. Through it, participating Bloomberg engineers were given the opportunity to convert their hours spent contributing to the pandas open source project into a charitable donation to a non-profit of their choice.
The panelists will discuss how we wove together differing viewpoints: non-profit foundation and for-profit corporation, corporate philanthropy and engineers, first-time contributors and core devs. They will showcase why and how we converted technical contributions into charitable dollars, the difference this community-building model had in terms of creating a diverse and sustained group of new open source contributors, and the viability of extending this to other open source projects and corporate partners to contribute to the long-term sustainability of open source—thereby demonstrating the true convergence of tech and social impact.

Automated Engineering of Domain-Specific Metamorphic Testing EnvironmentsPablo Gómez Abajo Context. Testing is essential to improve the correctness of software systems. Metamorphic testing (MT) is an approach especially suited when the system under test lacks oracles, or they are expensive to compute. However, building an MT environment for a particular domain (e.g., cloud simulation, model transformation, machine learning) requires substantial effort.
Objective. Our goal is to facilitate the construction of MT environments for specific domains.
Method. We propose a model-driven engineering approach to automate the construction of MT environments. Starting from a meta-model capturing the domain concepts, and a description of the domain execution environment, our approach produces an MT environment featuring comprehensive support for the MT process. This includes the definition of domain-specific metamorphic relations, their evaluation, detailed reporting of the testing results, and the automated search-based generation of follow-up test cases.
Results. Our method is supported by an extensible platform for Eclipse, called Gotten. We demonstrate its effectiveness by creating an MT environment for simulation-based testing of data centres and comparing with existing tools; its suitability to conduct MT processes by replicating previous experiments; and its generality by building another MT environment for video streaming APIs.
Conclusion. Gotten is the first platform targeted at reducing the development effort of domain-specific MT environments. The environments created with Gotten facilitate the specification of metamorphic relations, their evaluation, and the generation of new test cases.

Maybe you think about your build process daily. Maybe 8 years ago, you found a way that works and try to never touch it (xkcd 2347 anyone?). In this session, you'll learn how to combine the container skills you already have with a few new tools to rethink your standard Linux builds.
Bootable containers combine lessons from several projects with years of production experience to build, deliver, and maintain your familiar Linux environment in a new way. Some of the things we think are 'just the way it is' turn out to be less concrete with this new perspective.
Applying container principles to these builds lets us change the way we think about custom versus shared components, how to track changes and make them visible, and how we can use tools that already exist to address a lot of the toil and trouble associated with building, testing, delivering, and updating gold images.

These experiences, like threads woven together, prepared me for an audacious achievement: sending underrepresented speakers from five continents to WordCamps through strategic partnerships. This initiative isn't just about sending speakers; it is about sharing diverse voices, expanding perspectives on leadership, and weaving a more vibrant, interconnected thread throughout the WordPress ecosystem and tech. Join me as I share tools for change that transformed my fear of outsider status into an innovative solution for global connection and inclusivity.

However, as the complexity and scale of deployments grow, traditional tools often fall short of providing the granularity and efficiency required by advanced applications. To meet the demand, applications are increasingly leveraging eBPF (extended Berkeley Packet Filters) due to the revolutionary kernel capabilities it enables.
This talk will explore the integration of the eBPF ecosystem with Kubernetes, highlighting its potential to transform how operators and developers observe, secure, and troubleshoot their deployments. We will start by introducing eBPF and its core concepts, including its architecture, programming model, and key benefits such as minimal overhead, improved visibility, and dynamic tracing capabilities. We will then review real-world examples of open source tools which leverage eBPF for networking, security, and observability in Kubernetes environments. We will also explore an open source project called bpfman (https://bpfman.io), an eBPF Manager focusing on simplifying the deployment, administration and visibility of eBPF programs in Kubernetes clusters.
This presentation is designed for Kubernetes operators, security professionals, and developers seeking to deepen their understanding of eBPF and its applications in cloud-native environments. Abstract: How many dependencies does your software project have?
The answer is more complicated than simply looking at your requirements.txt or package.json file.
And as to how many you’ll have tomorrow? It turns out that if there’s anything you can say about your dependencies - it’s that “it depends”.
Most software is built with hundreds if not thousands of direct and transitive dependencies, and those dependencies change every day. Our analysis shows that up to 20% of PyPI packages change their dependency graphs multiple times per week. Ensuring that each one of these dependencies is trustworthy is a daunting task.
In this talk, we’ll compare the decisions that determine not just your dependency graph but also the vulnerabilities that might lurk in it, and for how long. We’ll look at what makes some vulnerabilities like log4shell so hard (and slow!) to fix across an ecosystem, dig into the complexities of dependency resolution algorithms (anyone want to solve a sudoku?), and recommend tools that can make practical dependency management possible if not easy.

Abstract: There are as many models for OSPOs as there are companies, and given the dynamic nature of the environment, it’s bound to get messy. And the OSPO is on your side! Most folks won’t sign up for such a role if they don’t have their heart on the side of Open Source and the developers that consume and deliver it. In this talk, I’ll highlight responsibilities of development teams and Open Source program managers when consuming open source in a commercial environment. Moving as much as possible “to the left” in a project’s development and communicating early and often can reduce friction when your project requests an outgoing license.

Abstract: Open Source Software, the backbone of today’s digital infrastructure, must be sustainable for the long-term. Qureshi and Fang (2011) find that motivating, engaging, and retaining new contributors is what makes open source projects sustainable.
Yet, as Steinmacher, et al. (2015) identifies, first-time open source contributors often lack timely answers to questions, newcomer orientation, mentors, and clear documentation. Moreover, since the term was first coined in 1998, open source lags far behind other technical domains in participant diversity. Trinkenreich, et al. (2022) reports that only about 5% of projects were reported to have women as core developers, and women authored less than 5% of pull requests, but had similar or even higher rates of pull request acceptances to men. So, how can we achieve more diversity in open source communities and projects?
Bloomberg’s Women in Technology (BWIT) community, Open Source Program Office (OSPO), and Corporate Philanthropy team collaborated with NumFOCUS to develop a volunteer incentive model that aligns business value, philanthropic impact, and individual technical growth. Through it, participating Bloomberg engineers were given the opportunity to convert their hours spent contributing to the pandas open source project into a charitable donation to a non-profit of their choice.
The panelists will discuss how we wove together differing viewpoints: non-profit foundation and for-profit corporation, corporate philanthropy and engineers, first-time contributors and core devs. They will showcase why and how we converted technical contributions into charitable dollars, the difference this community-building model had in terms of creating a diverse and sustained group of new open source contributors, and the viability of extending this to other open source projects and corporate partners to contribute to the long-term sustainability of open source—thereby demonstrating the true convergence of tech and social impact.

Automated Engineering of Domain-Specific Metamorphic Testing EnvironmentsPablo Gómez Abajo Context. Testing is essential to improve the correctness of software systems. Metamorphic testing (MT) is an approach especially suited when the system under test lacks oracles, or they are expensive to compute. However, building an MT environment for a particular domain (e.g., cloud simulation, model transformation, machine learning) requires substantial effort.
Objective. Our goal is to facilitate the construction of MT environments for specific domains.
Method. We propose a model-driven engineering approach to automate the construction of MT environments. Starting from a meta-model capturing the domain concepts, and a description of the domain execution environment, our approach produces an MT environment featuring comprehensive support for the MT process. This includes the definition of domain-specific metamorphic relations, their evaluation, detailed reporting of the testing results, and the automated search-based generation of follow-up test cases.
Results. Our method is supported by an extensible platform for Eclipse, called Gotten. We have successfully established our development process for Drupal custom modules, including automated testing using PHPUnit, all managed through our own GitLab CI/CD pipeline. This setup mirrors the automated testing process used by Drupal.org, which was our goal to emulate.
Building on this success, we have taken the next step by learning Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) using Behat. This approach allows us to automate the execution of acceptance tests for our Cloud Orchestration modules.
